Jodhpur to Jawai: distance and driving time
The distance from Jodhpur to Jawai is about 160 km, taking roughly three hours by road. The route heads south from Jodhpur through the Pali district toward Jawai Bandh. As with most of this region, a private car or taxi is the easiest way to travel, dropping you directly at your camp or hotel near the reserve. The route runs south on NH-62 through Rohat, Pali and Sumerpur, then a short local road into Jawai Bandh.
By road
Travelling by road from Jodhpur is straightforward — hire a car with a driver or self-drive south toward Pali and on to Jawai. By train
Jodhpur has useful rail links toward the reserve. The nearest station is Jawai Bandh (near the Mori Bera area), reached on the line running south from the Marwar Junction area toward Gujarat. This makes the train a practical option from Jodhpur for travellers who prefer rail to road. Several daily trains — including direct Jodhpur–Jawai Bandh services — run down the line via Marwar Junction and Falna, typically taking around three hours. From Jawai Bandh station it is a short transfer to most camps.
By air
If you are flying, Jodhpur Airport (JDH) is the nearest airport on the northern side, with connections to major Indian cities. From the airport it is about a three-hour drive to Jawai. Car or train — which is better from Jodhpur?
A private car remains the simplest option — door-to-door and about three hours to your camp. The difference from the southern route is that rail is more practical from Jodhpur: the line toward Gujarat serves Jawai Bandh, so the train is a genuine alternative here for travellers who would rather not drive. Choose the car for flexibility, the train for a fuss-free journey.
A simple Jodhpur and Jawai itinerary
- Day 1: explore Jodhpur’s fort and old Blue City; stay overnight.
- Day 2: transfer to Jawai in the morning (about three hours), check in, and take the evening safari that begins around 3:30 PM.
- Day 3: join the early-morning safari at around 6:00 AM, then continue south toward Udaipur, Kumbhalgarh or Ranakpur.

Should you base in Jodhpur or at Jawai?
Jodhpur is worth a night or two in its own right for the fort and the old city, but for the safaris you will want to stay near Jawai Bandh so the early-morning and evening pickups are just minutes away rather than a three-hour drive. Treat Jodhpur as your gateway and sightseeing stop, and reserve your nights close to the reserve for the days your drives are scheduled.
