Udaipur to Jawai: distance and driving time
The distance from Udaipur to Jawai is about 160 km, which takes roughly three hours by road depending on traffic and how many stops you make. The route runs from the Lake City into the Aravalli hills toward the Pali district and Jawai Bandh. A private car or taxi is the most flexible option, taking you door-to-door to your camp or hotel near the reserve. Many visitors take the scenic route via Ranakpur — home to the famous marble Jain temple — winding through the Aravalli hills before reaching Jawai; the quicker option runs north-west on NH-27 towards Pindwara and Nana.
By road
Most visitors from Udaipur travel by road, either self-driving or hiring a car with a driver. The roads are generally good and the drive is scenic as you climb into the hills. By train
The nearest railway station to the reserve is Jawai Bandh (near the Mori Bera area). Rail connections directly from Udaipur to Jawai Bandh are limited and can involve a change, which is why many travellers from this side prefer the direct road transfer. Jawai Bandh (station code JWB) sits on the Ajmer–Ahmedabad line, so trains from Udaipur usually route via Marwar Junction and take longer than the drive. From Jawai Bandh station it is only a short transfer to most camps.
By air
If you are flying in, Udaipur’s Maharana Pratap Airport (UDR) is the nearest airport on this side, with connections to major Indian cities. Car or train — which is better from Udaipur?
For most visitors, a private car is the better choice from Udaipur: it is door-to-door, lets you leave when you like, and lands you straight at your camp in around three hours. The train can work if you prefer rail, but connections from Udaipur to Jawai Bandh are limited and may involve a change, so the road usually wins on convenience and time.
A simple Udaipur and Jawai itinerary
- Day 1: explore Udaipur’s lakes and palaces; stay overnight in the city.
- Day 2: transfer to Jawai after a relaxed morning (about three hours), check in, and head out on the evening safari that begins around 3:30 PM.
- Day 3: take the early-morning safari at around 6:00 AM, then continue to your next destination.

Should you base in Udaipur or at Jawai?
For the safaris themselves it is best to stay at a hotel or camp near Jawai Bandh, so you are only minutes from the pickup point for the pre-dawn and evening drives rather than making a three-hour trip each way. Use Udaipur as the arrival and sightseeing base at the start or end of your trip, and stay close to the reserve for the nights you actually have safaris booked.
Combining Udaipur and Jawai
Because the drive is only around three hours, a great many visitors spend a couple of days exploring Udaipur’s lakes and palaces, then transfer to Jawai for their safaris. It is a natural pairing of a heritage city with a genuine wildlife experience.
